Telstra to close CDMA mobile phone network

FESA is urging its operational stakeholders to replace any CDMA communication devices before 28th January 2008.  CDMA devices include mobile phones and data cards, which allow wireless access to the internet from computers.

Telstra has announced the January date as the deadline for shut down of its CDMA network.  Telstra is offering its NextG™ service as a replacement for the CDMA network.

CDMA users considering phone carriers are urged to seek advice from mobile phone resellers about the availability and quality of different services in their geographic operational area.

Users can find out if their mobile phone is connected to the CDMA network by following the instructions at:
http://telstramobile.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/telstramobile.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=25

If users move to a new Telstra service, they can retain their existing phone number by following the instructions at
http://telstramobile.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/telstramobile.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=243

If users change their existing phone number and they want to use their phone to continue to receive FESA emergency dispatch messages, they will need to fax an ‘Amendment to SMS form’ to 1800 309 999 or email reports@fesa.wa.gov.au

The majority of FESA’s wireless services use the CDMA network and will be migrated to a new network before the deadline.
